McElroy's journey in broadcasting began at Marshall University, where he was actively involved with the campus radio station, WMUL. In 1975, he became the news director at WKEE-FM, followed by roles at WRVC and WEMM-FM, and served as the sports director at WWBA in Florida. In 1994, he co-hosted the morning show at WTCR-FM alongside Judy Eaton, a position he held until his retirement from radio in 2017.
